facebook bannerFollowing the success of its artist mentoring programme, Volition, JOLT is pleased to present a series of workshops and talks this August. The events will run from August 20th – 23rd inclusive in the Town Hall Theatre Galway, and at Áras na Mac Léinn, NUI Galway, and will include workshops in radio drama, music and aural design, a headshot parlour, free talks on social media and on application writing, and an interactive theatre piece. Pre-booking for all events is required, as capacity is limited.

Wednesday, 20th of August

JOLT Headshot Parlour     

Venue: Town Hall Studio | Time: 11am-5pm | Price: €20

Stand out from the crowd with a snazzy new headshot! The Town Hall Studio will be transformed into a full photography studio for one day only, where artists can avail of an industry-standard headshot from a professional working photographer at a reduced rate!

NOTE: If you wish to secure a place at the Headshot Parlour, you must pre-book by emailing studiotht@gmail.com before August 17th. Slots will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Thursday, 21st of August

Workshop: Writing Radio Drama (Part One)

Venue: The View, Áras na Mac Léinn, NUI Galway | Time: 10am-1pm | Price: €10

Ever wondered about the differences of writing for stage and for radio? Or how you can create a drama centered entirely on dialogue and sound? In this two-part workshop, Tara McKevitt, winner of the 2010 RTÉ PJ O’Connor Radio Drama Award, will investigate how writers can use spoken word and audio effects to create stories for radio. Participants will develop a short radio drama, which they will have the opportunity to record at a second workshop on Saturday, 23rd of August. Open to all levels, including those writing for the first time, or refreshing old skills.

 

Workshop: Creating Moments with Music

Venue: Town Hall Studio | Time: 2-5pm | Price: €10

Little John Nee, Artist-in-Residence at the Town Hall Theatre, will lead an afternoon of musical creativity, where musicians and theatre-makers will explore how music can create enriching theatrical moments. If you loved his recent award-winning Sparkplug, here’s your chance to learn from the master storyteller himself.

Friday, 22nd of August

Talk: Social Media & Promotion

Venue: Town Hall Bar Foyer | Time: 11am-1pm | Price: Free, but booking required

Darragh Doyle and Sinéad McPhillips will lead a discussion on using Social Media, illustrating how to build an on-line presence and how to promote work to maximum effect.

Talk: Application Writing

Venue: Town Hall Bar | Time: 2pm – 4pm | Price: Free, but booking required

Jane Daly, of the Irish Theatre Institute, will reveal how to write successful applications to funding councils and organisations, looking specifically at the upcoming Theatre Project Award and the Mike Diskin Arts Bursary. Those applying for these bursaries are advised to bring a draft of their application, as this session will include an opportunity to discuss individual proposals with Jane.

 

Performance: Immersed in the Void

Venue: Town Hall Theatre | Time: 5.30pm | Price: €8 */ 10 *

Immersed in the Void is an interactive, promenade piece, which investigates the innate connections between music and emotion. The piece will be created and performed by an ensemble of actors, working with local electronic duo Voids, and will take place in both theatre and non- theatre spaces.

NOTE: This event is not suitable for patrons who have impaired mobility or special access.

Saturday, 23rd of August

Workshop: Writing Radio Drama (Part Two)

Venue: Flirt FM | Time: 10am- 1pm | Price: Free, upon completion of first workshop

In this second workshop, participants will have the opportunity to work with actors in a recording studio, where they will create a short radio drama.

 

Workshop: The Magic of Aural Design

Venue: The Cube, Áras na Mac Léinn | Time: 2-5pm | Price: €10

Set design is a familiar concept, but what about the design of what we hear? Máiréad Ni Chróinín, co-Director of Moonfish Theatre, will share her expertise on aural design, and ways it can be evoked through music, soundscape, sound effect, voice and song. From high-tech to low-tech, participants will experiment with instruments, loop pedals, microphones, found objects and recording software in an afternoon of spirit and play!

Workshop and Headshot Parlour fees must be paid in case on the day of the event.

Workshops are €10 each, however, if you book for all three workshops, you get the third one absolutely free!
